SPEAKERS -  Craig Wells P.E., ENV SP, Regional Manager, McKim & Creed
Jessica Beach P.E., Utilities Engineer, City of St. Augustine

With a price tag upwards of $200 billion, the 2017 hurricane season was the most expensive in U.S. history. Seventeen named storms pummeled the country, particularly Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico. This surpassed the previous record of $159 billion in damages set by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This is according to a November 30, 2017 article by Willie Drye in National Geographic.com.  And although many areas are still reeling from 2017, meteorologists don’t anticipate a reprieve in 2018.  So with the frequency and intensity of storms increasing, how can communities prepare for damaging storms? The answer can be found in pre-disaster climate resiliency and risk mitigation planning.

Craig Wells, PE, ENV SP, regional manager with McKim & Creed, and Jessica Beach, PE, an engineer with the City of St. Augustine’s public works department, will discuss what municipalities can and should do to protect their critical water infrastructure from sea level rise. Craig has developed specialized experience and expertise in helping municipalities deal with the current and future issues of sea level rise and climate resiliency. Jessica oversees St. Augustine’s stormwater program and is instrumental in helping the city develop climate-resilient infrastructure and mitigate risk.

Craig’s and Jessica’s presentation will explore the proactive options available for climate resiliency preparation, including baseline risk, impact studies, modeling, assessment, adaptation and funding sources.
