Topic: Get Rid of PFAS in your Water

Speaker: Viraj deSilva, PhD, PE, BCEE, Freese and Nichols Senior Treatment Process Leader
 
PFAS are stable chemicals that do not naturally degrade. When released into the environment, PFAS can contaminate groundwater and surface water, and these impacts may pose a risk to public health and the environment. The recently released EPA PFAS Strategic Roadmap sets timelines to safeguard public health and protect the environment. This means all utilities must follow guidelines to produce PFAS-free water. To achieve this, new PFAS MCLs, modifications to NPDES permits, and restrictions on biosolids management could be expected in the next few years.

  • EPA’s latest PFAS Roadmap
  • The Fifth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCRM 5)
  • Potential sources of PFAS and ways to eliminate them from entering waters
  • Available options for PFAS treatment and waste disposal
  • Costs for PFAS sampling and treatment
  • PFAS Workshop information at 2022 FWRC (1:30 PM, Monday April 25,2022) 
Viraj deSilva is a Senior Treatment Process Leader in FNI's Water/Wastewater Treatment group. He has a Civil Engineering BS from Ukraine, MS in Water Treatment from Japan, and PhD in Wastewater Treatment from Northwestern University.  His 29 years of experience on water and wastewater treatment projects across the U.S. and 12 other countries, includes PFAS management and treatment projects in 5 states working on airports, landfills, municipalities, and other contaminated sites. He has published in or presented at over 180 industry journals and conferences, and authored EPA, WEF, ASCE and AWWA manuals of practice. Viraj currently serves on the WEF’s PFAS Task Force and works closely with the national EPA PFAS Council, several EPA Regions PFAS groups, along with several state agencies for the development of the new PFAS regulations. His PFAS presentations and publications are in WEF, AWWA, AMTA, SWANA, GWPC, PFAS Forum, APWA, SAME and NACWA. He teaches PFAS courses at Forester University, CA, and FL Environmental Permitting School.
 
In March 2022 at AMTA/AWWA conference Viraj was awarded the 2021 AWWA’s Best Paper in Membrane Treatment for his work on “Managing and Treating PFAS in Membrane Concentrates.”

1905 Salad & Cuban Bread

Option 1: Pollo Salteado:

Boneless pieces of tender chicken sautéed in a hot skillet with extra virgin olive oil, garlic, green peppers, Spanish onions, fresh mushrooms, potatoes, chorizo and red wine. Served with yellow rice.

Option 2: Roast Pork “A La Cubana”

Generous slices of roast pork with a delicious marinade. Served like back home in Cuba with black beans, white rice and platanos.

Option 3: Snapper Russian Style

Boneless fillet of sea bass, breaded with seasoned Cuban bread crumbs and grilled. Garnished with lemon butter sauce, hard boiled eggs and parsley. Served with yellow rice.

Option 4 - Vegetarian “Cubana”

Yuca, black beans, white rice, platanos, tostones and sautéed fresh vegetables.
